Ethos Rules

Effects of Ethos
The Ethos is a very important factor in the game. It reflects the reputation of the character in the “civilized world” and shows how famous – or infamous – your character is. The Game Master can give Ethos points for almost every situation he thinks that are worth some points (i.e. street robbing, Murder, saving a kitten from a tree, saving a whole town from being killed…you get the picture), if he likes. The list on the left shows you how many points you need to reach another Ethos value.
The Ethos has a strong influence on the story, how NPCs react and on the character personally. When the Ethos changes, all effects will change too (drop out or add). The given bonuses are not permanent but linked with the Ethos! The following list will inform you what effects your current Ethos has on your character.

Effects on the Story
I will simply give you some examples on the effects of the Ethos on the story and the NPCs. The final judgement lies of course with the Game Master.

Heroic (+4): Welcomed in nearly every city or town, the character has such a high reputation that people would do anything to make him happy. The character gets many (dangerous) assignments that “only a hero can solve”. Everybody knows his face, and parents tell their children the stories of your adventures. People with a negative Ethos tend to hate the character.
Irreplaceable (+3): The character has proven himself useful, so that many interest groups contact him to give him assignments. He also proved to be very trustful. He is well-known in his city, but people with a negative Ethos tend to not liking him.
Popular (+2): The character is often asked to do smaller assignments. People who know the character smile when they see him, but people with a negative Ethos only laugh about his efforts.
Helpful (+1): The character is known at least in the city quarter where the character lives. People like to talk with him or ask for his help (mostly peanuts).
Neutral (0): Everything is possible!
Unnoticed (-1): Nobody cares for the character. He is just a stranger on the streets.
Dreaded (-2): The people change the side of the street when they see the character. If he enters a shop, the other customers will leave in a hurry. Most of the “good people” don’t want to have anything to do with the character.
Hated (-3): The character has made some enemies in the civilized world! Entering of a major city is often prohibited, and if the character won’t leave, they will make him leave.
Infamous (-4): The character is a legend – but not a good one. He often has to defend himself from grudgers and headhunters; sometimes even the military is on the hunt. The true scourge of the civilized world!!
