General Information

Machina Obscura is a project to create a Steampunk Roleplaying Game with Pen & Paper, cardgame and Tabletop characteristics. The players can create and develope their characters in the pen & paper part (with all features of a normal pen & paper rpg) and battle with their characters, vehicles, ships or airships in the Cardgame/Tabletop part.

In this game, which is set in a steampunky, somewhat victorian background (in our world, it would be the time from 1840 - 1900), the skies are crowded with airships (not only zeppelins, but also actual flying ships), the oceans are conquered not only by sailing ships but also by steamboats and steam-submarines. There are cities which have train lines with other major cities, some even have an inner-city train line (or tram-lines). But there are also many land vehicles powered by steam or electricity which roam the continents.

This is an after-war world; there were the so-called "Ancient Civilizations" who fought a war which brought them nearly to extintion, at least to a state where all the knowledge was lost. Now, after hundreds of years, the civilization has recovered, and Archaelogists and Adventurers bring the news of the old civilizations - i.e. in the Great Rainforest of Southern Maccara, where several gigantic mechanical spiders were found. Those are long destroyed & long beyond repair - and overrun by the forest plants. But they were the foundation of the invention "Mechanical Spider", which is a small but fearsome machine which everybody with the necessary skillz and parts can build.

The players can choose from different character classes (not races, as there will be no dwarfs, elves and the like to the game), which involve Engineer, Chemist, Blacksmith, Professor, Adventurer, Archaelogist, Electrician, Gunslinger, Businessman and many more. A big part in the game are the inventions. You will use manuals, which you can buy or discover if you are lucky, and use if you have the necessary skills. In order to do so, you will need to have the necessary parts, and then with a test on your specific talent you can create those inventions. It will be even possible for the players to create their own, mindblowing wonders of technology - if the game master is grateful. You can send these inventions to this account if you like, and if they fit in the gameplay, they will be added to the official manuals.

There will be a newspaper, called the "New Central Chronicle" where new technologies and major (and some minor) events in the gameworld will be presented.

This game also is an opportunity for artists to show their skills. Over the months, I was able to find many artists that that were willing to either create art for the game, or to allow usage of already existing artworks. You can find these artworks either in this accounts' gallery or in the favs :+favs: of this account. You can always do art for the game, if you like. Just make sure to send me a note with the link! ^^ I also have a list of needed artwork, so if you wanna do some of that or need ideas, I'd be most delighted if you check out the journal link Needed Artwork.
